The Children's Recreation Centre at Soami Nagar

Revered Prof. Prem Saran Satsangi on 9th July 2006, while talking about the ‘Innovative Evolution of the Race of Superman’ stated, “But we all know that careful nurture has a great effect on children too. Even if one succeeds to bring good souls into this world, if they do not get the opportunity of proper nurture in accordance with the new polity and new devotional method they cannot become Superman”.

Setting up a conducive environment to nurture young brains is so very important. One of the pillars in Dayalbagh for this is 

The Children Recreation Centre (CRC)

These have been established and run in various Dayalbagh Branches across the world, to provide an opportunity for children to come together, make friends with each other and to have company of persons with similar values, while providing entertainment and developing some desirable skills.


This week, Ms. Arti Prasad gives us insights into the activities of the CRC Center in Soami Nagar, New Delhi. Ms. Prasad, an alumnus of Dayalbagh Educational Institute, is the Principal of Soami Nagar Model School and the CRC Incharge of Soami Nagar Branch. A keen sportswoman, she has a strong passion for teaching and serving society and loves to work with children.

As per guidelines from Dayalbagh, CRC- Children’s Recreation Centre (बाल मनोविनोद केंद्र - Bal Manovinod Kendra) was established in Soami Nagar, New Delhi on 29th May 2011.  Its main objective is to give a platform and opportunity to Satsangi children to imbibe Dayalbagh values and culture from a young age. Children develop many skills through peer group interactions and with the help of empathetic volunteers and mentors. Dayalbagh defined the guidelines and responsibilities for parents, and identified activities for children.

In our branch, children meet every Sunday after Branch Satsang to enjoy various activities and they play various games at the centre like, Shabd Kautuk, Chess, Carrom, Chinese Checkers, Draughts, Mechanix and other outdoor games. Shabd Kautuk (Hindi Scrabble) is an innovation of CRC Dayalbagh, which helps in improving vocabulary and learning correct spellings in Hindi. CCA- Council of Children’s Affairs is also very active in our branch wherein children challenge their minds to build models or give presentations on special occasions like Earth Day. They also make posters on various topics, plant saplings, improving efficiency of working at CRC using new techniques and technology and at the same time increase their knowledge about Dayalbagh culture through quizzes on occasion of Bhandaras.

Revered Prof. Prem Saran Satsangi ji's visit on 14th May 2015:



It was an auspicious moment when Revered Satsangi Sahab visited us. The CRC group made a model of the Sigma Six Q model covering all Six Qualities. Revered Satsangi Sahab inspected and interacted with children and advised them on economical use of resources and cost effectiveness, Google maps and GPS, use of latest technology in dairy, Gassifier, manure production etc. He emphasised the need for inculcation of Values and Quality, which leads to Excellence.


Excursion Trips:

Once a year, an educational excursion trip is organised for CRC children. Parents are  also  involved as volunteers in this and it serves as a great opportunity for children to enjoy, learn various values like sharing, helping others, tolerance, leadership etc. On 9th August in 2015, children were taken to Red Fort to relive the state's history and gain knowledgeable facts about our country's past.


Values and Quality Day Celebration in Branch:



Diwali was celebrated as “Values and Quality Day”. A fair was organised in evening where children made Rangolis and decorated the campus using recycled plastic bottles and other waste items, imbibing values of “Waste nothing”. Children pledged to celebrate a Green Diwali and to save our environment. Different activities and games were planned for children, along with parent’s involvement. Refreshment was served to all by CRC volunteers. Children sold hand made planters; magnetic fridge stickers, bookmarks, spiral pads, photo frames etc., which they have learnt in Craft classes. Children wrote slogans and poems expressing their views and ideas on Values. A game was played with children, which was based on values like respect; punctuality, being economical, honesty etc.



Cultural Programmes:

CRC children learn and recite holy compositions and also take part in skits and street plays, action songs etc. with lot of enthusiasm. A puppet show was also organised by Noida branch CRC children and interactive session on Book Reading was conducted with them.


Workshops:

To involve parents in CRC activities, workshops are conducted on various topics. Interactive sessions helps them to share their problems in bringing up children and expectations of children. Guidelines are also shared from time to time and experienced persons from the branch help in counselling. Workshops are conducted on “Time Management”, “Innovation”, “Google search and GPS”, “Green Technology”, “Leadership skills”, “Team work”. Learning is through worksheets, presentations, brain storming exercises to make it enjoyable.



Every Sunday, after the branch satsang, children participate in a Physical Drill and enjoy sprouted chana. Children also help in cleaning activities at the branch, be it the satsang hall or grounds. They play outdoor team games in winters like kho-kho and badminton, which they enjoy the most.

Children enjoy field activity and learn about flora and fauna with mentors who guide them and explain various aspects. CCA children did a project on “Air Pollution in Delhi” in which they studied causes, effects, solutions, particulate matter. They also did a project on “BIODIVERSITY”. Children of various classes collected data in groups, made scrap books, studied factors in neighbourhood and analysed the results.

Intellectual Growth and Brotherhood values:

Various competitions are organised for children at the centre and also at District and Regional level once a year. In these children play with peer group of different branches and develop feeling of competitiveness and brotherhood at the same time. 




Keeping in mind the development of “Complete Man” and “Superman” of satsang, we CRC team are trying to inculcate and sow seeds at an early stage with motto of Sahyog (सहयोग), Sangathan (संगठन) and Safalta (सफलता), i.e. collaboration, organization and success.

Notes from DEI IEEE R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference

The Dayalbagh Way of Life is not fixed at some point of time in the past. It is evolving with immense innovation, with Dayalbagh and its institutions imbibing and contributing technology to make human life on this planet more sustainable. The innovation cycle followed by Dayalbagh is evolutionary and not revolutionary, so that we can take each person along.

In the words of Revered Prof. Prem Saran Satsangi, from his book, Management of Rural Energy Systems, published in 1983, “…in the service of The Last, The Least, The Lowest, and the Lost Among Mankind”. So, we are looking at implementation of technology that furthers the Humanitarian cause.

In December 2016, Dayalbagh Educational Institute hosted and conducted the IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Technology Conference (HTC). IEEE, as many of you may be aware is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, with ~450,000 IEEE members in over 160 countries.

The focus of this Conference was on Sigma Six Q & Smart Villages: making sustainability a way of life. The scope of conference papers included, the application/innovation of technology to improve quality in the following areas: Energy, Education Systems, Environment Systems, Healthcare, Agriculture & Dairy, Smart Village and Women Empowerment & Security.

Here is a summary of the topics of the Conference Speakers, speakers outside of DEI and IEEE...

On Day 1, in the Theme Session, the first speaker was Padma Bhushan Dr. V K Saraswat, Former Secretary Defence R&D, Member NITI Aayog.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat is an Indian scientist who formerly served as the Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Indian Minister of Defence. He is presently member of NITI Aayog i.e. the organization that replaced the Planning Commission of India and Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Dr. Saraswat kick-started the Theme Session on Gandhiji's quote on our working for a Planet that we will not see. He walked us through the past, the damages caused by our advancement, like land-fills, impact on rivers, depletion of non-renewable sources, loss of habitat and other staggering challenges like global health, food, water, rising temperatures, species extinction, coral bleaching and mortality, coastal flooding and reconfiguration of coast lines, droughts, disease vectors. He took us through disruptions like Global Urbanization, accelerating climate change, aging world, greater global connections. He gave us a glimpse and road map for the future, developing and deploying transformative and enabling technologies and the necessary and desirable transformations for sustainability and ushering in a human centric era.




Dr. Anoop Srivastava, IG, Indian Railways, presented his views on “Sigma Six Q practices in Dayalbagh, a smart eco-village”.

Establishment of Dayalbagh has a unique place in the history of India. The metaphorical foundation stone of Dayalbagh was laid on 15th Jan 1915 in the form of plantation of a mulberry tree by its August Founder, Sir Anand Swarup Sahab, which heralded conversion of a sandy, barren land into a lively green-belt created and maintained by the settlement of like-minded people. At the time when planned development of the kind we know today was rare, it was only a divine plan that could envisage enrichment of the colony with Sigma Six Q practices in the days to come.


A term coined by Revered Prof. Prem Saran Satsangi, to describe the Dayalbagh way of life, Sigma Six Q refers to the six salient qualities that are inherent in the dynamics of this eco village. Summation of these qualities, viz., Innovation, Air Quality, Water Quality, Health and Education, Agriculture and Dairy, and Values- such as duty, beauty, humility courage, temperance, wisdom, loyalty and justice-leads to synergistically enhanced impact on the system. Dr. Srivastava’s talk covered the highlights of Sigma Six Q Model as practised in Dayalbagh and its importance for sustainable growth.

The third speaker in the Theme Session was Padma Shri Dr. Ashok Gulati, India’s top Agricultural Economist whose topic was “Growing the Third Crop – Doubling farmers’ incomes by harvesting solar power”.

Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi said, “Poverty is the worst form of violence” and also considered “Science without Humanity” as a spiritual sin. He suggested the use of technology to alleviate poverty and thus uplift humanity.

Government of India has set an ambitious target of 100,000 MW of solar power capacity to be achieved by 2022. Interestingly, Government of India has also set another ambitious target of doubling farmers' incomes by 2022!

The uppermost question in everyone's mind is: can these targets be achieved by 2022?

This is particularly so when the current solar power capacity in the country touched 8000 MW by July end, 2016, and no country in the world has such an ambitious target as India has set out for 2022.  On farmers' real incomes, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the recent past (FY 2003 to FY 2013) has been a mere 3.5%; and doubling these incomes by 2022 would mean increasing this CAGR from 3.5% to more than 12%. 

Our global review suggests that costs of solar power have come down across the world, by about 70 per cent since 2010-11. Most projects have been executed as ground mounted utilities or as rooftop solar. But we submit an innovative policy- that saves on land as well as help to augment farmers’ incomes. A significant progress can be made towards achievement of both of these goals of Government of India, provided both are conceived and implemented in unison, a sort of marrying each other, with innovative policies- like the guaranteed feed-in-tariffs (FIT) for solar power generated on farmers' fields- to back this alliance. Solar power can be used all along the agriculture value chain- as a third crop for farmer fields, for solar powered irrigation systems, for cold storage's and processing industries like dehydration. A true model of Competitiveness with Inclusiveness, this can be Scaled up in a Sustainable manner (CISS Model). This will also help to reduce power subsidies of state electricity boards (SEBs), wherever solar power can substitute existing connections.

The only thing to be seen is how to raise advance capital funds, how to organize farmers on these lines, how to convince the Discoms for guaranteed feed-in-tariffs, and how long it is persevered till the goals are reached!

On Day 2, we had a Special Session on Science of Consciousness (more on this in a separate post - a small summary here)

Prof. Vishal Sahni presented a paper on “Innovative (Superintelligence with Spiritual-Quality and Value Based Control-) Graph Theoretic Quantum System Modelling (IGTQSM)”.

This was followed by a session by Dr. Anirban Bandyopadhyay on “Consciousness is music of the primes”.

Dr. Dayal Pyari Srivastava presented her research on “Scientific Epistemology and the Phenomenology of Consciousness: Looking for Correspondence between them using SQUID based MEG Device”.

The session ended with Dr. Bani Dayal Dhir giving an overview of (i-c-n-c-) TALL, “(iNFORMATION-cOMMUNICATION-nEURO-cOGNITIVE-) Technologies Assisted Language Lab at Dayalbagh Educational Institute.


On Day 3, we had Mr. Jayant Krishna, COO, National Skill Development Corporation, whose talk was on “Reaping the Demographic Dividend through Skilling India, leveraging technology for Skill delivery”.

Education is the key to sustainable development. It is the creation, adaptation and sharing of knowledge, skills and values that is essential to development – both at the individual level as well as at the macro level. Right to Education is not only an excellent catalyst for social change and justice, it helps us understand and realise our other rights – economic, social and cultural.

Education combined with skills form the driving forces of economic growth and social development for any country. With the rise of the knowledge society and growth of digital media, the goal posts keep changing for what might constitute as basic functional literacy.

India has developed a national higher education system that offers multiple choices and pathways to acquire a variety of skills. With nearly 700 universities and more than 35,000 affiliated colleges enrolling more than 20 million students. In contrast to the ageing population of the western world, India has a unique 20–25 years window of opportunity called the “demographic dividend”. This demographic dividend presents a tremendous opportunity for India to become a global economic leader. It is expected that India will have more than 700 million people in the working population by 2022, with 12 million people expected to join the workforce each year. This talent pool needs to be adequately skilled.


In order to prevent demographic dividend from turning into a demographic disaster, the government has taken several steps to empower people at the grass root level and help them acquire skills in order to earn a better livelihood. In November 2014, the government also formed the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, which will catalyse skill development initiatives across the country.  The single biggest reform is the amendment to the archaic Apprenticeship Act, which now make it easier for companies to hire and train apprentices. Apprenticeship has been a successful model of skilling youth in countries all over the world. This reform alone can increase the number of apprenticeships in India from the current 2.4 lakh to 30 lakh a year. The motivation through Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) has driven more than 20 lakh candidates to get skilled and certified in the last one year. The journey has just started; the path has just been laid to lead India into an era of becoming the skills capital of the World.

The Valedictory Speaker was Dr. Ajoy K Bhattacharya, MD, National Green Highway Mission who talked about his mission, Carbon Sequestration – My Way is the Highway

Dr. Bhattacharya talked about developing eco-friendly National Highways for Sustainable Environment & Inclusive Growth, with objectives of develop a systematic framework for Integrated Green Corridor Development along National Highways, Build resilient ecosystem in the form of “Green Corridors” along National Highways for Combating global warming and climate change effects, Optimum GHG sequestration, conservation of native species of the region, develop unique green corridors with aesthetic appeal, reduce the impacts of air, noise pollution and dust, reduce soil erosion at embankment slopes, reduce the effects of wind and incoming UV radiation.

Additionally, there were two special tracks and a Hackathon.

Special Track 1: Women in Engineering track


The theme of the session was, “Women Empowerment to break barriers and lead the smart world”.

The chief guest was Ms. Sneh Bijlani, Treasurer of Dayalbagh Educational Institute. She captivated the audience by narrating her own experiences in achieving top level positions and the hardships one has to face as a woman and how she overcame these with perseverance.



Special Track 2: Young Professionals Track

This track was focused on “The Digital Revolution and its implications in everyday lifeThe speakers view was that with the dawn of digital technologies, we are in the early stages of significant changes leading us into the age of “Systems”. The machine age which has industrial revolution as its counterpart is now giving way to “Systems Age” having automation and AI (Artificial Intelligence) as its technological counterparts. “The Rise of the Robots” and “Machine Learning” technologies are will cause unemployment so much so in about thirty years, half of world population will be out of jobs according to a report. As one computer scientist put it, "We are approaching a time when machines will be able to outperform humans at almost any task. I believe that society needs to confront this question before it is upon us: if machines are capable of doing almost any work humans can do, what will humans do?” In the years to come life could be absolute leisure with no work and this could be death knell for human survival, particularly if the developing technology is not kept as a good servant. These sentiments were echoed when Stephan Hawking had said that AI, if left unchecked, "could spell the end of the human race". Elon Musk (Tesla Inc.) also sounded that future advancements in AI could be akin to "we are summoning the demon".

In order to understand the revolution, we are experiencing we need to look more closely at the concepts, ideas and philosophies that are shaping the evolving world view. This calls for a shift in our thinking that is required as the world unfolds around us in this “Systems Age”. The globalized world is a giant social system, interdependent and interconnected (hyper connected). So, our approaches to understand and solve problems cannot be based on mechanistic view of the world, hitherto followed. If we are complacent and maintain status quo on how we think and act in a reactive mode, there will be “degradation of our quality of life, if not our standard of living”. As we move into the systems age, we need to supplement our high-tech abilities, with thinking abilities that are high concept (systemic ideas, detecting patterns, creativity) and high touch (empathize, purpose and meaning).

And in parallel to all these sessions we had the fun-filled Hackathon

Typically, these conferences tend to be academic in nature, with limited industry and student interaction. In this conference, a hackathon/makethon was launched, as it offers the opportunity to bring together the best of:


  • Academia – latest technology and research ideas. Bringing theoretical concepts to real world through building prototypes.
  • Industry – state of the art engineering and design concepts, science in action. A platform where the academic and student community provides new ideas and new talent to fuel the next generation of their products and service offerings.
  • Students – motivated, enthusiastic next generation leaders of technology. This event offers access to cutting edge technology, which helps them gain hands on technical skills in line with industry trends.


There were over 150 registrations and 70 final participants. It represented how the next generation of student members will be indispensable in our search for sustainable solutions to some of the major, existential problems that lie before us – climate change, unprecedented pollution, population growth, diseases and epidemics, and natural disasters.


The winning projects were:

Efficient Water Management
Water is a big problem: Today, India ranks second worldwide in farm output. Agriculture and allied sectors like forestry and fisheries accounted for 13.7% of the GDP (gross domestic product) in 2013, about 50% of the workforce. We have come up with an Efficient Water supply management System in which adequate amount of water will be used, based on the crop, time during the crop cycle and in a drip irrigation way and not flood. 

Real Time Automatic Plougher and Sower (RAPS)
Nowadays farmers face problem in getting adequate labour. This system will reduce labour work of farmers and help in increasing the preciseness in seed sowing system. The system is a robotic vehicle that facilitates ploughing fields and sowing seeds without human intervention.

Park IT
Majority of the Traffic problem is due to improper parking system.  In India 25% Accidents are due to improper parking in Metro Cities. This prototype consists of a mobile app and hardware unit that helps user book the parking slot in real time. This system will solve daily life parking problem faced by people in Metro cities. This system will allow you to register your vehicle number in the parking system through mobile app. The system will also notify you about the available parking space nearby.

Sound of Silence
Speech impaired people always face difficulty in communicating and socializing with people around them. The system recognizes gestures of speech impaired people and convert them into sound signals. Hence this system helps speech impaired people to communicate effectively with the people around them. This will overall create a change in their day to day life.

Any Time Medicine (ATM)
We come across long queues around medical shops and at times there is an early shutdown of medical shops. This causes inconvenience to public who require medicines in urgency. The project aims at providing medicine anytime and anywhere. This system helps to get the medicine you require in case of emergency. Tap on the medicine of your choice and you can pay by scanning QR code. In case the medicine is not available a message will be displayed to convey the same.

Smart cycle sharing system
Going from one place to another in big educational, corporate and community campus is very time consuming. The density of vehicles is exponentially rising not only causing health related issues, but also rising environmental concerns.  The complete system consists of GPS based tracking device that helps in real time tracking of bicycle. The user has an option to pre-book the cycle through mobile app.

Smart Renewable Energy Microgrid at Dayalbagh Educational Institute

Some weeks back we introduced you to the Renewable Energy efforts at Dayalbagh Educational Institute (DEI). We get a bit more technical this week and introduce you to the,
Smart Microgrid developed and implemented by the Institute.

In order to carry out sustainable developmental activities in agreement with the concept of Eco-Village, DEI took bold initiatives in harnessing the renewable energy through Solar thermal and Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) power plants in 2010. Today, the institute has Solar Thermal Cooking systems in all the hostels. The whole university campus is powered by 11 Distributed Roof-Top Solar PV power Plants aggregating to a total of 668.2 kWp. 


To ensure efficient, reliable and economic operation of the distributed energy resources and achieve proper coordination among them, a need based R&D project to indigenously develop a Smart Micro Grid in the institute was started with support from DST’s Solar Energy Research Initiative (SERI) in 2014.


The Dayalbagh renewable energy smart microgrid is a modern, small scale electricity system comprising a group of distributed loads and distributed renewable energy resources acting as a single controllable entity in synergy with the grid. It is designed to achieve specific local goals, such as energy reliability, security, carbon emission reduction, diversification of energy sources, and cost reduction. Such smart microgrids are an ideal way to integrate renewable resources and form the building blocks of Smart Grids.



All the solar power plants at DEI are Hybrid PV Power Systems with battery storage to facilitate off-grid operation whenever required. The three phase DSP based, Grid Support Conditioners (GSC) are designed to operate as a multi-function power conditioning unit combining renewable energy sources on priority with the functionality of an industrial UPS system.


The effectiveness of renewable energy microgrid was evident during the major grid collapse on two consecutive days on 30th and 31st July 2012 in India when over 600 million people (nearly half of India's population), in 22 out of 28 states in India, were without power. The outage caused "chaos" for Monday morning rush hour, as passenger trains were shut down and traffic signals were non-operational Trains stalled for three to five hours. Several hospitals reported interruptions in health services, while others relied on back-up generators. Water treatment plants were shut down for several hours, and millions were unable to draw water from wells powered by electric pumps. Excessive use of diesel generators (a popular backup resource) caused local pollution and high cost for the consumers. However, Dayalbagh Educational Institute, having its own SPV microgrid, was not affected and the teaching – learning- co-curricular activities continued normally in a pollution free environment and economic fashion. Even on normal sun-shine days, the institute is self- sufficient in power and not affected by the frequent power outages. Under cloudy conditions, a careful battery management ensures uninterrupted power supply to the whole campus.  



INNOVATIVE FEATURES & BEST PRACTICES
The following features are being incorporated as part of the R&D project to develop the smart micro grid with remote monitoring, communication, control and fault diagnosis of DERs from a central control station, which would ultimately enable the development of a Decision Support System for Optimal efficiency, economics and reliability. 

  • Display of Inverter parameters viz.  inverter voltage, current,  power, grid source for inverter parameters, solar current, voltage, power, solar irradiance, ambient temperature, heat sink temperatures, data logs etc. All of these parameters can be accessed from the central control station through our institute LAN. As per the requirement, the inverter behaviour can be controlled by remotely changing the software set points and selecting different modes of operations. All the inverters are on the institute LAN and accessible remotely through the front end program.

  • Display of Load Parameters through integration of Smart Meters: Load currents, voltages, powers on all the outgoing circuits can be accessed at the central control station through smart meters over the institute LAN.

  • Remotely controlled switchgear and change-over switches: Change-over switches for the selection of source (grid or solar) are installed for every outgoing circuit in various control rooms. A system has been designed and implemented to monitor the status of the switches and remotely control the selection through the software at the central control station.

  • Battery charging: Battery charging is a very important feature of the system affecting the life of the battery and overall system efficiency. Battery charging is to be closely monitored and controlled so as to utilize the solar power fully and ensure float operation of the battery as far as possible. Grid charging schedules (in rainy, cloudy days) for all the 9 power plants are carefully scheduled to prevent overloading of the sub-station. 

  • Water Pumping: A scheme is being designed for remote monitoring and control of water pumps in the institute for punctual and efficient operation of water pumps. This will be integrated to the central control system software. A prototype with remote control and monitoring using Short Messaging Service on GSM mobiles has been developed and implemented for field testing.

  • String monitoring and fault diagnosis: With thousands of panels in the institute, it is difficult to identify a mal-functioning panel. The requirement has prompted development of a ZigBee based wireless monitoring system for string current measurement. All the measurements of a plant would be collected at a central computer for processing and analysis. An alarm would be raised if some string is found to be mal-functioning along with the geographical location of the string. A prototype of the same has been developed. 

The Dayalbagh Educational Institute initiative has demonstrated that Universities, building intellectual resources through teaching-learning and research, offer a perfect platform for establishing renewable energy microgrids. In addition to sustainable development through clean energy technologies and self-sufficiency in energy, a university microgrid is an ideal test bed for conducting indigenous research and development through UG & PG projects and Ph.D. thesis. This would ensure quality research with relevance as well as development of skilled man power and intellectual property in the area. Universities can design and implement model curriculum for vocational diploma and certificate courses in solar energy technologies, provide earn-while-you-learn schemes to the students and encourage entrepreneurial start-ups through incubation cells.

The Auspicious eco-friendly little yellow-brown Van of Dayalbagh

In this world rapidly transforming into a global village, transportation is an important need and a bond for us social humans. This sector is also one of our biggest polluters. There is an ever-increasing number of vehicles on the road and continuously dangerous levels of pollutants in the air. In the US, 27% of their Greenhouse Gas emissions are from transportation.1

This week our post is a story of ingenuity and innovation, a story of preservation of air quality while wasting nothing, a story about the

“Auspicious eco-friendly little yellow-brown Van of Dayalbagh”.

From the Internet to the Ultrasound, many amazing innovations are products of professors and students working together in great universities around the world. Academic isolation is replaced by linkages and collaboration of institutions, industry and society enabled by technology.

At Dayalbagh Educational Institute active learning takes place even outside the classrooms. Innovative learning environments include group learning and practical applications, with conducive infrastructure and technology to facilitate.

Dayalbagh ensures very high air quality for its residents and encourages use of alternative energy sources. The residential colony doesn’t allow regular vehicles inside its campus and the tree lined roads encourage you to walk or cycle. Residents who find it difficult to do both need alternatives to regular gasoline vehicles for their commute within the sprawling campus.



This presented a unique “local” opportunity for innovation.

Seeing both the local Dayalbagh needs and understanding the global trend on cleaner emissions, Dayalbagh Educational Institute took up the challenge of creating a solar augmented, battery operated vehicle for Dayalbagh residents, in a collaborative project between Department of Electrical Engineering and Automobile Engineering.

A diesel van, which had been used for auspicious cross-country tours, was taken up. The vehicle was getting old with increasing cost of maintenance, increasing fuel consumption and other safety issues.


The project team was led by Prof. Ajay Saxena and Prof. Bhagwan Das along with a very capable and dedicated team of faculty, students and local volunteers2, to convert the diesel van into a Solar Electric Van.

While designing the converted vehicle, the team decided to retain the original look adding to cherished memories of the van’s yesteryears.

The van was converted into a Solar Electric Van by replacing the diesel engine with a 25 HP electric DC motor powered by a 96V, 400Ah battery bank. The van batteries are charged by Solar photo-voltaic modules during sunlight hours and through grid power during the night. Roof mounted solar panels of 1.2 kWP in the constrained rooftop. There is also a manual single axis sun tracking system to optimize solar energy received.


Every day the van consumes 20 units from the grid (night time charging) and 5-6 units of solar power.

To minimize re-build cost, the body parts of the van were not replaced by lighter weight parts as is a norm in converted vehicles. The weight of vehicle without motor/battery/engine adds up to 3000 kg! Add to it the weight of 20 HP, 96-volt DC Motor of 90 kg, and 16 batteries (6 volt each lead acid type) of 800 kg.

The design and conversion was done in-house in Dayalbagh Educational Institute including fabrication of parts. A thorough study of similar battery vehicles was conducted by the project team when they undertook the challenge.

Costing Rs. 1.6 Lacs, through regular maintenance the battery has lasted all these years. The total expenditure on conversion of the van was about Rs. 6 Lacs!

The seating capacity of the vehicle is 20+ passengers and it is regularly used to ferry Dayalbagh residents within the Colony, collecting a nominal charge of a few rupees and has an average earning of Rs. 400 per day (by the way, the idea is not to earn money on it).  The vehicle is operating since 2009 without any major fault. Faults, if any, are rectified by Dayalbagh Educational Institute team.

The van also becomes a practical guide for the students. This has fueled further innovation and the students have already converted two Maruti vans into battery operated systems. One of Maruti vans has 450-watt solar panels mounted on the roof!

This is just the beginning, the next automobile innovation being taken up is that of converting a Mahindra Scorpio into a hybrid vehicle! One which can run only on diesel, or only on battery or run on both the power systems at the same time.

In all these models, there will be regenerative braking, where the batteries are charged back during braking, thus conserving energy. The idea is also to mount flexible solar panels, on the roof top to augment through direct solar energy, while the vehicle is parked or moving!

Again, this will be a first of its kind. A retro fitting, not just a stop-start hybrid vehicle, but one that can be driven within a city on battery and can be powered by diesel on the highways alleviating distance concerns and keeping the battery costs and vehicle weight down!

Amrit - the Food for Divine Mortals

According to Hindu Mythology, on churning of Kshir Sagar (Ocean of Milk), Dhanvantari, the heavenly physician, God of Ayurveda, emerged with a pot containing Amrit, the heavenly nectar of immortality. A fierce fight ensued between Devas and Asuras for the nectar. To protect the nectar from Asuras, Garuda took the pot, and flew away from the battle-scene. The Devas appealed to Vishnu, who then took the form of Mohini and as a beautiful and enchanting damsel, Mohini distracted the Asuras, took the Amrit, and distributed it among the Devas, who drank it.1

Have you tasted Amrit? Do you have the desire to become one with the Divine?

The Amrit (अमृत) that I am referring to, comes from a very different Manthan (churning). A daily Manthan of Love, Devotion, Selfless Service and above all Grace. A Manthan where everyone can participate and partake in the distribution.

In her book, Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way, Shauna Niequist writes, “I think preparing food and feeding people brings nourishment not only to our bodies but to our spirits. Feeding people is a way of loving them, in the same way that feeding ourselves is a way of honoring our own createdness and fragility.”2

Mr. Narain left his leadership position in the hospitality industry, where he headed operations for the Jaypee Palace Hotel in Agra and earlier headed operations for key hotels of the Taj Group to do “Seva” (selfless service) as the Deputy General Manager at the “Bhandar Ghar” in Dayalbagh, a community kitchen that serves both the residents of Dayalbagh and the pilgrims that make their way to Dayalbagh from far and near.

Mr. Rajiv Narain writes…

Dayal Bhandar or Bhandar Ghar (Dayalbagh Community Kitchen) opened on 16th Feb 1915.

As a child, I remember sitting on the floor of our mother's kitchen at home and eating food served from the Patila (pot) along with hot Phulkas (puffed Indian bread) straight from the Tava (pan) and Sigri (stove). Food which was fresh and tasty accompanied with lots of love and affection.

This is exactly what is happening at the Bhandar Ghar. It is the Rasoi (Kitchen) which prepares lunch and dinner for the residents of the Dayalbagh colonies and for the visitors.

The raw material like wheat, rice, lentils, mustard oil, vegetables including potatoes and onions are grown and produced in the Dayalbagh fields with selfless service of the Dayalbagh Residents and Visitors and in which the Revered Leader also participates hence all the ingredients are blessed with Grace, Love and Affection.

The Bhandar Ghar operations start at 4:30 AM in the morning with a group of lady volunteers cutting vegetables and cooking starts at 6 AM by trained and experienced staff and the food is ready for dispensing at 9:30 AM sharp for about 1,000 diners normally, the number goes up to anywhere between 6,000 to 15,000 during Bhandaras (a gathering of pilgrims). As the lunch finishes the preparations for dinner starts by another group of lady volunteers and the dinner is ready by 6:30 PM sharp. Simultaneously the roti (puffed Indian bread) making happens between 6 AM and 12:30 PM in the morning and between 4:30 PM and 8 PM in the evening by a group of lady volunteers and is made manually on wood/coal fired Bhattis (furnace) and about 10-12,000 rotis are made every day.


The Bhandar Ghar has minimal number of regular staff and the major part of the operation is supported by teams of volunteers in the age group of 18 to 90 yrs. The dedication and punctuality of the elders is unmatched and exemplary.


The biggest challenge for the Bhandar Ghar management is to keep the food cost under control and as per the budget as there is an unbelievable price of Rs. 6/- meal (vegetable, dal, roti, rice) charged to each diner. The monthly expenditure is checked and audited to keep it in line with the budget.

The menu changes every day with a special menu for lunch on Sunday’s followed by khichadi for dinner, so that you are ready for a busy Monday.

The Bhattis (furnace) are lit with wood cut from the dead trees from our fields and the challenge ahead is to find an alternate fuel as dead wood is becoming scarce day by day. We also use solar energy and gasifier and are dependent on sunlight and wood respectively. Efforts are on for induction cooking as an alternate with the help of solar and steam generation.
Bhandar Ghar also boasts of its horticulture in the form of beautiful front lawns with multi-colored seasonal flowers. It also has medicinal and fruit trees like Neem, Jamun, Bel, Guava, Lemon-tree and Drumstick.

There is a continuous effort to maintain and improve hygiene in preparing and serving food by way of training and providing appropriate tools. In order to ensure food safety, water from an R.O. plant is used for all preparations.

In case of any excess food, the same is informed to the rest of the
Agra branches for pick up and leftovers are relished by Cattle at the Gaushala (Cowshed).

The day ends with utmost satisfaction if all diners are satisfied with our Seva in preparing tasty, hygienic and safe food.
